What are German men like?

Before we get into this with too many details involved, you should know that Germany is a huge country.

This means that the way that German guys look and act like is probably completely different on the other side of the country.

However, there are still some things that most of them have in common, and we’re going to focus on them.

Physical Appearance

Yes, of course, they get a perfect 10! Have you seen typical German men?

They’re basically the American dream, except for, well, in Germany.

German men are from the North of the European continent, so you might find them similar to Swedish or Dutch people. Or Scandinavia, in general.

They don’t necessarily have any distinct features when it comes to the shape of their face, but the one thing that would usually make you realize that you’re looking at a German man is their light complexion, light eyes, and usually light blond hair.

All in all, these guys are going to blind you like they’re the sun! And they’re hot as the sun, as well.

When it comes to their other physical attributes, I should start by telling you that German males are usually really tall.

The average height of a German man is somewhere around 5’10’’ (or 178.1 cm), which is going to be heaven for American women looking for German men.

Even though the Netherlands and the tallest people in the world are nearby, Germans are somehow normally sized and shaped.

This means that you’ll find plenty of tall ad handsome German men to hang out with as soon as you land there!

Another thing that I could say about their looks is that they’re pretty fit.

Being fat or obese isn’t a common thing that you can see in Germany.

Being physically active is something that they do from a young age and then actually continue doing it, like psychopaths.

I’ve met one too many German guys who actually like to go out for a run in the morning!

However, they aren’t that into going to the gym to lift weights or do similar things that would help them get bigger muscles and such.

They’re more into cardio activities, but they prefer being outside than getting holed up in some sweaty rooms.

Except when they’re going to a spa, that is.

Or when they’re with you. Sometimes. We will get into this later, but this whole conversation about their want for physical activity is also a good conversation point for the topic of German men in bed.

German men Physical appearance

Style

Honestly, I feel like the old me would have given German men full 10 points and some bonus for the way that they dress, but now that I have traveled almost the whole world… they’re just a bit boring, I guess?

German men are practical and organized. They like looking well and dressing well, but not in an authentic or colorful fashion.

They tend to wear things that make them look good and elegant, which is a good thing, but they also make all of them look the same.

If you put an outfit that a regular German guy would wear next to an outfit that I guy from Spain would wear you’d see what I’m talking about here.

All in all, their practicality doesn’t make them stand out from the rest when choosing an outfit to wear, so I can’t say that they have an actual authentic style, but they still dress well.

But these are just physical characteristics, and we shouldn’t only on them.

So, what are German men guys like? Keep reading to find out about their character.

Character Traits of German Men

I’m aware that character is the kind of thing that’s personal to every individual and that I shouldn’t generalize the whole nation based on the actions of few, but these few were repetitive.

I also know that there are a lot of German guy stereotypes, and I’m here to break some and confirm some.

Are German men stylish?

Additional Rating – The Tinder 1000 Swipe Rating

On top of the physical trait ratings for Thai men, we have also created our own additional rating from the Thai men we see on Tinder.  We call it the 1,000 Tinder swipe rating. It is extremely accurate and gives a very good overall picture of the men and how attractive they are.

This is how it works.

We swiped through 1000 different profiles in all of the major cities of Germany and took note of how many handsome men there are. We jotted down how many 8’s, 9’s and 10’s there are based on their profile pictures. Here is a quick breakdown.

  • 0-100 is poor
  • 100-200 is OK
  • 200-300 is Good
  • 300 – 400 Is Incredible
  • 400 + is Mind blowing (There are only a few of these)

With a Tinder Plus subscription, you can teleport to anywhere in the world and swipe for yourself. Find out more below In the section about how to meet German men. Also, make sure to check out my other country guides to see how their Tinder scores compare. “

German men tinder score

1. Gentleman rating

Being a gentleman has kind of become a weird concept over the last couple of decades, especially when it comes to guys who act like gentlemen regarding women.

Usually, a gentleman would do anything that he thought a woman shouldn’t do herself, like open doors for her, give her flowers and compliments, and pay for the bill.

Before you start dreaming about sexy German men too much, I’m going to have to break your fantasies for a bit, because this is international dating after all.

Your German boyfriend most likely isn’t going to do any of the above-listed gentleman behavior until you explicitly tell him to do so, and even that depends on his mood.

This happens because, apparently, German women don’t like it, which might be a shock, especially to Americans.

In Germany, they’re all about equality and respect, so expect to always pay for the half of the bill.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that they aren’t well-behaved, it’s just that typical German guys aren’t gentlemen in the old sense of the word.

German men Chivalry factor

2. Integrity

German men know who they are and what they want to do in life, even though sometimes it might seem to you that they’re reaching all of those goals painstakingly slowly.

They also care about their family and their people, especially as they get older in life.

Actually, one of the main reasons why they’re so hard-working, even at a younger age, is because they want to be able to provide for their family when the time comes.

German men have integrity

3. Honesty

Well, I’m going to have to be honest too here.

This is a rocky 10 and that’s because when you meet German men you’ll realize that they can get too honest and they usually have no concept of white lies and having a filter in general.

But, at least they’re honest, so I got nothing to complain about.

German men are honest

4. Loyalty

Hey, don’t look at me like that!

I know that I just said that they’re honest and that they will never lie to you, but I can’t give all men a 10 for this! You never know who you’re going to run into.

But honestly, chances are that dating a German man is more likely going to end in a lengthy and practical conversation than in a screaming match about his loyalty, or lack of it.

Anyway, German guys in bed are loyal to a fault.

German men are loyal

5. How protective are they?

Of course, your German guy is going to protect you if you ever need to be protected, mainly because he’ll love you and that would just be a feeling that he gets naturally.

However, here’s where we mention the concept of equality again.

Your man is most likely going to think that you can handle an argument on your own, so he’ll leave you to it.

Also, they aren’t really the type of people who like to get into arguments or fights, so that’s most likely not going to happen in the first place.

German men Protective factor

6. Are they resourceful?

German men are resourceful in almost every sense of the way.

First of all, most of them know how to cook and fix some basic things around the house that you might have been having trouble with.

Secondly, financial security, work, and providing for their family is very important to them, so most of them are hard workers who live in a country with high standards, and you can see where this is going.

Dating German men means always having someone to fall back on, but that doesn’t mean that they’ll let you lean on them indefinitely.

How resourceful are German men?

7. Maturity

You were wondering about what are German men like in relationships?

Well, they are mature. I’m even going to say that they are too mature.

This is usually a good thing, but their practicality and the fact that they can act like robots most of the time can completely kill the mood.

For example, their honesty and their loyalty are great in theory, but can you really say that once he sits you down at the kitchen table to tell you that he’s in love with somebody else and that he wants to leave you?

Sometimes dating a German guy can just be so tiring.

Maturity is high among German men

8. Self-confidence

Don’t get me wrong, they know that they look good, it’s just that German dating culture is different and they‘re also so shy when it comes to approaching women.

If you were wondering how to meet German men you should know that the best option would be to take the matter into your own hands.

They’re shy, even if they’re hot German guys.

German men are truly self confident

9. Are they friendly or reserved?

When you meet German guys you’re most likely going to think that they’re cold and distant.

Well, you’re kind of right.

It usually takes them a while to open up, but there’s plenty of great things that they’re hiding under that cold demeanor, you just have to give them some time.

German Men are very friendly

The German man is very discipline and a hard-working man, this is a trait I found to be common among the German men.

Handsome and good looking is a characteristic exhibited by a typical German man. They are flexible, protective, and very romantic.

It won’t be a bad idea dating a German man, as I will suggest you give it a try, and you will not regret the experience.

German men Overall score

Pros and Cons of Dating a German Man

Now that we covered what are German guys like in relationships and in life in general, we should learn to separate the good from the bad.

Everybody has their flaws and their virtues, even handsome German guys. Let’s learn more about them.

Pros

1. Their honesty and loyalty

I absolutely have to put this at the top of this list, because every woman deserves an honest and loyal man, and yet they are so hard to find.

With your German boyfriend, you’re bound to know exactly how he feels and what he’s doing, and you’ll never have to worry about him cheating on you with some other women.

2. The beer and culture in general

I’m putting the beer and culture into the same pot here because they truly are inseparable in the lives of many German people.

Beer is one of the most famous products, along with wurst, that you absolutely have to try when you go to any city in Germany.

These things are so important to German people that they have different festivities organized, and the themes of those festivities usually revolve around said beer or wurst.

Your German man is most likely going to take you to one of these places, maybe even Oktoberfest.

The only thing that you have to do is have a good time!

3. He’s going to consider you his equal

This can be great in a lot of aspects, but it can also be… not so great.

First of all, it’s great because you should never be with a man who thinks that you’re below him and that he’s the one in charge, especially when we talk about finances.

Your German boyfriend is going to consider you as a human being who’s on the same level as him, in all aspects of life.

On the other hand, this can be pretty tricky if you’re the type of girl who likes to get spoiled or who likes being dependent on others.

Chances are if he sees that you’re not on the same level that he’s on, he’s going to leave you.

Cons

1. He works too hard

Most German men tend to go to work and work there, and then come back home and work some more.

This is because they are taught to be hard workers in general, and they’re used to working a lot and you’re going to have to find a way to get him to get off his laptop and focus his attention only on you.

I give you the artistic freedom to choose any way that you like and what you want to try, but you should know that letting him look up from the screen is going to be the hardest part!

2. Everything has to be organized immaculately

The thing that probably bothers me the most is that the Germans are so precise!

This is a good thing in some other aspects of life, but I don’t consider being organized and having every single little detail planned out to be all that romantic.

We need to be spontaneous from time to time.

It brings excitement and the feeling of freedom to our minds.

But, with Germans, you shouldn’t be surprised if they start planning the trip that you wanted to take months in advance.

3. They won’t make the first move

German men are notoriously shy, so even if you’re the most beautiful woman in the room chances are that none of them will actually approach you.

This why sometimes you have to take the matter into your own hands and get that German boy right into your clutches.

It shouldn’t be hard once he starts opening up, so good luck.

Where to meet a German Man

Now that we covered all the things that you should know about their characteristics, let’s get to the real deal.

How do we get all of these sexy German guys? Where to meet German men?

For a start, you can meet them in Germany. Just kidding.

The usual answer would be going out and you making the first move, but if that’s not really your style you can always use some of the online dating websites that are popular in this beautiful country of beer.

However, there are some sites used in Germany that will be much easier for you to use if you speak German, because they don’t really have any other options.

I decided to pick one of the most famous dating sites in Germany but that can also be used in English.

eDarling

This is arguably one of the most famous dating sites used throughout Europe, and it’s filled with single German men.

It’s based on an algorithm that gives you partner suggestions based on your profile, which we’ll talk about first.

Making a profile on this dating site is free, but not that easy.

The first step is to register, which you can do with just your email, and then do some basic things like writing your username, choose which gender you’re interested in, and pick a photo.

When it comes to your photo, pick one that’s high-quality and that shows your face clearly, preferably with a smile.

A good profile photo makes your chances of getting a date skyrocket.

After that comes the more important step, and that is filling out the questionnaire about your personality.

This step can take a while, but don’t lose patience just yet! It’s important to fill it out as truthfully as you can because you’ll get match suggestions based on that. Sometimes you gotta work for love.

After that, you can just wait for your suggested matches and see if any of them interest you enough to shoot them a message.

However, if you want better chances and cooler features that you can use on this website, you should pay for a premium membership.

When you become a free member there are only a couple of things that you can do.

Firstly, you can only receive 7 matches a day, which isn’t that great, but it’s good for when you’re trying to get the feel of the site and learning how to use it.

You can also send “likes” and smiles to your matches, upload photos to your profile, and see the results of the personality test that you took.

But, on the other hand, there are things that you can do and features that you can use that are going to make the whole experience much more enjoyable, but you’re going to have to pay up.

And that’s at least 39.90 euros a month, which is a lot, but it’s worth it.

The fact that people should pay to use the website means that a lot of fake accounts filled with catfishes and scammers are immediately cut out of the picture, so there’s nothing that we can complain about here.

The features that you can get as a paying member are helpful and will make it easier for you to find your German man.

You can do things such as send photos, messages, see profile visits, your profile will be shown to more people so you’ll get about 20 matches a day without restraints, and a detailed explanation of the personality test.

All in all, this is a great place to meet single German guys.

But, where to meet German guys if you want to experience the cities and the culture while you’re at it?

Luckily, I have just the answer for you.

Traveler’s Guide to Meeting German men

Yes, finding a German man on dating sites might seem like a good option, but why would you do that when you’re in one of the most interesting countries in the world?

It’s going to be better for you to get the feel of the German dating culture if you actually go out and explore.

Also, as I mentioned before, German men are shy! You’re going to have better chances if you can look them in the eyes when you’re flirting with them, as it will have a better effect than sending them out flirty messages, either in English or German.

Where to meet German guys and which cities are the best for this adventure? Let’s find out!

1. Berlin

Berlin is the capital city of Germany, and it’s a center point for a lot of tourist attractions and the most important happenings all around the country.

What makes this city so special is the art, history, and single locals.

Berlin has somehow, after the Second World War, managed to rise from the ashes and become of the most important cultural spots in Europe.

It’s filled with galleries, both street and regular ones, and it’s filled with people who give it that artistic vibe.

So, if you’re into the type of guy who likes art you’re most likely going to find him somewhere in Berlin.

He’s either going to be sitting in one of the many cool hipster cafes, or he’ll be wandering the city aimlessly and going through various museums and galleries, looking for inspiration in the world around him.

The other type that you can find in this magical city is the night owl.

If you didn’t know, Berlin is also famous for its nightlife, which can be pretty tiring at first, if you’re not used to it.

Most of the places play modern techno music, and the parties are more of the rave type, but if that’s your role you can just go to any of the night clubs and find the German man for you in no time.

There’s even this place that works for three days straight each weekend, and the party lasts the whole time. That means that you can go there in the middle of the day and you’ll still find people partying the days away.

Long story short, if you’re more into the kind of life that’s fast and fun, pick Berlin as your landing spot.

2. Munich

The next place on this list has to be given to heaven on Bavarian Earth.

Munich is another one of the cultural capitals of Germany.

It’s filled with amazing buildings, historical sites and single people who know how to have a good time.

I mean, after all, this is the place that gives us Oktoberfest each year, so you know that they know what’s good.

Guys from Munich are also shy and subtle when it comes to flirting, but there’s a lot of them who are single.

If you’re wondering how to meet a German guy, the most likely place where you’re going to find single German guys in Munich is in one of the many pubs or taverns.

German guys like nothing more than to just sit down with their friends and have some good-quality beer and a talk, but don’t worry, this isn’t a red flag.

Even though they drink a lot of beer, German people, in general, aren’t alcoholics. They just like to sit down from time to time and enjoy the moment with a beer in hand.

But remember, dating German guys can be a bit frustrating when it comes to flirting and showing affection, so as long as you show him exactly what you want you’re going to get good responses.

I think that out of all the cities in Germany, this one has the men that are mostly chill.

They care about you, but they’re living a stress-free life and you should show them that you’re capable of living the same way and that you won’t disturb your relationship with the stress that’s not needed.

Another good thing is the dating site made for ex-pats and English speaking people, but it’s free for everyone.

It’s called MunichSingles, but it doesn’t have such a big number of users. You could still try it out though.

3. Hamburg

The great thing about German cities is that all of them have clear distinctions.

If you wake up in Berlin just one look around you will tell you that you’re in Berlin, and the same thing goes for both Munich and Hamburg.

All of them are just so special in their own way that you can’t really mix them up.

Hamburg is mostly known for being filled with culture and monuments, but it also has one of the most famous harbor areas, called the Port of Hamburg.

This is what makes it a meeting place for plenty of people from all around the world, a place where cultures meet.

There are a lot of tourists in the area, but there’s also a lot of hot locals, you just got to watch out for them closely.

Online dating is more famous in Hamburg, so you can always use one of the dating sites that are made for matching foreigners and locals.

Using online dating sites might be a better way to find single German men in Hamburg because there aren’t that many of them, like in Berlin and Munich.

And if you’re feeling adventurous you can always take a stroll around the city, especially around some cool places near the city center or the harbor area that are most likely going to be filled with locals.

Like in Munich, guys from this city like to chill out and have a beer or two, so going out to some pubs is a must!

Now let’s get to some German men dating tips.

How to Conquer a German Man’s Heart

I taught you all the things that you should know before you go into the adventure that is dating German men, but we’re getting more serious now.

I have some tips for dating a German man that you should follow if you want to win him over and keep him while you’re at it.

Let’s get it!

1. Be persistent and patient

Remember that international dating can be tough because the cultures are different and understand that German guys aren’t going to flirt with you directly, or at all.

Sometimes you’re going to have to be the one to make the first move, and there’s no shame in that!

They also aren’t going to fall head over heels in love with you as soon as you meet, and they might not show their affection, especially not in public.

However, they’re honest people so you should be honest too. Tell your German partner what’s bothering you about his approach and chances are that you’re going to get an improvement.

2. Show him that you’re his equal

Equality is important in Germany, but not just in the way that we’re used to.

I already mentioned that you’re going to have to pay for your share of the meal, and I don’t see anything wrong with that.

German guys like strong women who will show them that they can take care of their own and help them provide for their family in the future.

It even happens that people break up because the difference between their salaries and lifestyles is too big.

3. Respect his organized lifestyle and be on time

German men are practical and organized. They like to have everything planned in advance.

This makes them lack the spontaneous aspect, but it’s kind of refreshing to have somebody next to you who knows what they’re doing with their life.

Whatever you do, don’t be late for a date! Your German guy will most likely come early and you being late will just show disrespect and make him question his choices when it comes to dating you.

4. Take care of the way you look

They aren’t shallow per se, but German men do like a woman who takes care of herself.

I mean, who doesn’t?

They’re elegant people, so you should be elegant too.

They also don’t like it when women wear too much makeup and are bigger fans of the natural look, so work on achieving that to better your chances.

Dress casually, but elegantly, and just show him that the way you look is important to you, but you have to make it seem effortless at the same time.

It sounds a bit tricky, but it’s more than possible.

5. Be more active

German guys absolutely love going outdoors.

They can do anything out there, even if it’s just walking, or going for a run, or camping.

They also have a knack for cycling, so your German date is most likely going to ask you to go on a ride with him as one of your dates.

To get a German guy to like you show him that you enjoy being active, preferably outside.

Maybe the two of you could go on a hike together one day and enjoy the activities together.

6. Language barrier

German is one of the harder languages to learn and to be completely honest, it doesn’t sound all that attractive at all.

There’s a lot of sounds that we don’t have in English and every noun has an article in front of it that just seems like it’s given to it randomly. And let’s not forget the cases.

Even though learning how to speak German is hard, it’s not impossible, and there are plenty of places online where you can learn at least some of the basics for free.

On the other hand, you might not need it, especially if you’re going to Germany for a shorter time.

Almost every German has excellent knowledge of English and you should have no problems when it comes to communication.

But, sometimes talking about feelings and emotions can get tricky when you’re speaking a foreign language, so give him some time and learn some German to make your communication easier.

Now that I’ve taught you all that you need to know and gave you some German guy dating tips, let’s look at some of the finest specimens that this country can offer.
