I’ve traveled almost the whole world and enjoyed every second of it, but China is the only place that I get truly nostalgic about.
If you are new here, make sure to check out all the men’s country guides to see how Chinese men compare in all categories.
This part of East Asia is the only place that I regret leaving. The parts that left the biggest impact on me were definitely the culture and the people that go with it.
Specifically Chinese men.

Of course, this is a question that isn’t easy to answer in just a couple of sentences.
We’re all different in some ways and that’s what makes us unique, what separates us from each other.
However, there are still things that bind us and show that we belong to a group, whether it’s the way we dress, talk, or look like.
So, what are Chinese men like?
To keep it simple, the Chinese guys are fantastic. Yeah, there’s always going to be good things and bad things, but that’s just the way it is.
And if you’re interested in dating Chinese men and want more answers, I have some for you.
Physical Appearance
First of all, it’s important to note that China is one of the countries with the biggest territory and the biggest number of people that live in it.
That means that there are subtle differences between people from different parts of the country, but it all comes down to a couple of shared attributes.
The people that live in this area are Asian, which means that Chinese males usually have straight dark hair and dark oblique eyes. If you compare a Chinese man to a, for example, Russian man, you’ll find the differences extraordinary.
Actually, people from China, usually kids, are fascinated by attributes that some westerners have – blond hair, light eyes, and hairy arms are not a sight that you can see often while in China.
Their high cheekbones, flat noses, and smooth skin make them look handsome, and the fact that they are always almost hairless gives them the air of agelessness.
One thing that I have to take a point off for is their height, unfortunately.
There’s a difference in average height between Chinese men who live in rural and urban areas.

Typical Chinese men from the country are 5’6” (169.5cm), while those from the urban areas, namely Beijing, have the average height of 5’9”.
American women looking for Chinese men might be a bit discouraged by this, because we all want a man who’s taller than us, but remember that this is just average height.
There are plenty of sexy Chinese men out there of all shapes and sizes.
Also, studies have confirmed that Chinese people are getting taller, which most likely happened because of the change in nutrition that was brought by the western world.
Speaking of sizes, I’m going to have to take some points off from the figure aspect.
Most Chinese men have a slim frame, but I noticed that as they get older they stop taking care of themselves as much as they used to, and they get fatter, which also comes from the West, I guess, but still.
There are a lot of Chinese guy stereotypes, and you should know that not all of them are true before continuing into an adventure that’s dating Chinese guys.
Style
When it comes to style I was able to notice a big difference depending on the age group.
For example, you can clearly see that younger guys are interested in fashion. They usually show that by wearing branded clothing though, which isn’t necessarily fashionable.
A lot of them tend to wear branded items that are fake, but that’ just the fashion industry there.
However, as they get older they get more serious.
Handsome Chinese men in smart dark suits can sometimes be a gift from God, but sometimes not so much.
But one thing that I can say for sure is that you’ll rarely see a Chinese guy who’s dressed badly or just too casual. They are serious people after all.
Long story short – they know what fashion is and tend to dress normally, but I wouldn’t say that they can compare to the French or the Koreans.
But now, let’s talk about their personalities. And maybe even more importantly, what are Chinese men like in relationships?
Additional Rating – The Tinder 1000 Swipe Rating
On top of the important physical trait ratings for Chinese men, we have also created our own additional rating from the Chinese men we see on Tinder. We call it the 1,000 Tinder swipe rating. It is extremely accurate and gives a very good overall picture of the single men and how attractive they are.
This is how it works.
We swiped through 1000 different profiles in all of the major cities of China and took note of how many handsome men there are. We jotted down how many 8’s, 9’s and 10’s there are based on their profile pictures. Here is a quick breakdown.
- 0-100 is poor
- 100-200 is OK
- 200-300 is Good
- 300 – 400 Is Incredible
- 400 + is Mindblowing (There are only a few of these)
With a Tinder Plus subscription, you can teleport to anywhere in the world and swipe for yourself. Find out more below In the section about how to meet Chinese men. Also, make sure to check out my other country guides to see how their Tinder scores compare.
Character Traits
We all know that looks aren’t important in the long run, so what are Chinese guys like when it comes to their character?
Of course, as I said before, everybody is a bit different, but there are some things that pretty much all of them have in common.
These attributes that are common in China but not common in the west are what can make international dating so hard, but there are plenty of single Chinese guys out there who are going to win you over regardless.
1. Gentleman Rating
One of the Chinese men stereotypes is that they are not good at acting like gentlemen and, based on my experience, I have to disagree.
Typical Chinese guys are going to treat you well, respect you, take care of you and your feelings, and they definitely won’t be afraid of spending some money on you.
I can even claim that they’ll spoil you with their passionate approaches.
Of course, there will always be those guys that just weren’t raised right, no matter where you go.
The interesting fact is that the term “gentleman” doesn’t actually exist in the Chinese language. Well, it does, but it just doesn’t have the same meaning that we have.
When we think “gentleman”, we think of Sherlock and other British characters, but the Chinese have this term “junzi” which is used more to signify a person of higher rank that you can look up to.
It’s a similar thing, but you might find your Chinese boyfriend trying to adapt to the British version more.
I’m leaving you to think about what this means regarding Chinese men in bed.
2. Integrity
Unlike their Japanese neighbors, the Chinese go easier on the working schedule and actually try to make time for their friends and family. And their girlfriend, of course.
Family is one of the most important things for a Chinese man and they will always protect their family, whether it’s their mom or second cousin. It’s amazing and will most likely make you fall in love.
Dating a Chinese guy is going to be a breath of fresh air because they will actually pay attention to you and your needs, but still give you space.
3. Honesty
Chinese men are known for being serious, and while that’s not entirely the case, I can say with confidence that they are honest but those things kind of go hand I hand if you ask me.
You’re wondering, what are Chinese guys like in relationships? They’re honest!
Sometimes too much, if you ask me, but at least they won’t lie to you in your face.
They still get a point off for that, sometimes we need those white lies to get us through the day.
4. Loyalty
I already mentioned their amazing respect for family values and their honesty, so I have to connect it to this somehow.
If you’re dating a Chinese man there’s nothing to worry about. They’re loyal and intent on keeping you as their partner.
This could also be contributed to the fact that there is a big problem in Chinese dating culture, and that is the misbalance of the number of Chinese men and women.
There are many more men than there are women, mainly because of the one-child policy, and finding a girlfriend can be really tough for Chinese guys, so they learned to keep what they have.
Unfortunately, there are always going to be exceptions to the rule, so I have to take away a point for that.
5. How protective are they?
Dating a Chinese man means that you’re going to be protected no matter the cost.
Well, they’re not overprotective exactly. They’re just going to be there for you and make sure that you’re doing fine.
They could get jealous because they know that you have plenty of single Chinese men to choose from out there, but don’t let that stop you from experiencing what could be the best moments of your life.
They won’t take you for granted because they know how hard it would be to lose you.
As I said before, their family is everything to them and they’re going to keep you safe like you’re one of them already, but they’re going to give you space.
6. Are they resourceful?
I got to give it to them, these guys are extraordinarily hard workers, which means that you won’t have much to worry about when it comes to the financial part of your life together.
However, they might be lacking in knowledge of some other practical things.
This is an individual thing, but I have met way too many of them who don’t even know how to cook a decent meal for themselves, let alone for me!
So in this area, I would definitely have to say that there’s a number of them who can get by with what they know, but there’s more of them who are sometimes embarrassing to look at.
7. Maturity
There’s this thing that seems to happen to all Chinese guys once they grow up – they turn serious.
Like, really really serious.
I don’t really know where it comes from, but it’s quite a drastic change.
Well, I might be overreacting a little. It’s a good thing. If you meet Chinese guys who seem too childish like for their age, you know that it’s the right time to leave.
I don’t know where the maturity comes from, but it makes hot Chinese guys even hotter in my eyes.
There’s nothing like a man who doesn’t act like a twelve-year-old but still manages to make you laugh so much that your stomach starts hurting. So, they aren’t overly serious, but they’re great.
8. Self-confidence
When you meet Chinese men you might think that they’re not your type or that they’re exactly your type, there’s no in-between.
You might think that they are the best looking male specimens on this planet and your dreams might be filled with sexy Chinese guys feeding you spring rolls.
But, they might not feel that way.
The impact of western culture and media, and the fact that there are fewer women that they can choose from, has made Chinese men more self-aware when it comes to their body and their looks.
I understand them, it’s really a struggle out there.
Some of them just look so amazing but still won’t believe that you even want to talk to them.
However, there are a lot of them who know that they’re hot and who strut it around.
Imagine that confidence when it comes to Chinese guys in bed.
9. Are they friendly or reserved?
Out of all the countries that I have ever been to China has to be the only one where everybody always treated me with kindness and smiles.
I have to say that these are the friendliest people on Earth, and I had the most wonderful times hanging out with them.
The Chinese men seem like really serious types the first few times when you hang out with them, but they’re actually super friendly and will surprise you with their patience when it comes to your language barrier.
They’re going to introduce you to their friends, hang out with you, and just have fun altogether.
China is a highly developed country that support men and women working to earn a living.
When you visit, you are guaranteed that the Chinese men will not look down on you because of your different cultures and tradition.
You have read about their personalities so it is time to know the good and the not so good aspect of these East Asian men.
Dating a Chinese Man: Pros and Cons
Like in any international dating adventure, there are some problems and blessings that can occur, but you’ll see that none of them are that bad.
Besides, imperfections are what makes us perfect!
Pros
1. Being able to experience amazing food and culture
I’m sorry, but I just had to put this as the first thing on the list.
When I was a kid I would dream about visiting China one day, and I blame it all on a documentary that my dad was watching one evening.
Needless to say, when I came there all of my expectations were fulfilled, and more.
Dating a Chinese guy will open you up to a new wonderful world that you never experienced before.
2. They won’t take you for granted
I said this before and I say it again, Chinese men know what kind of trouble it is to get a woman so they’ll be intent on keeping you happy and satisfied enough to stay with them.
The dating scene in China is tough for single Chinese guys and they really have to try hard.
The materialism and their obsession with brands can also be seen here, so don’t freak out when a guy tries to buy your attention with gifts.
It’s a common case, but not always a good one. There are even stories about guys who tried to propose to their girlfriends by buying them unimaginable gifts only to be rejected.
Anyway, the extreme cases still show what they’re ready to do just to keep you.
3. Their family is everything to them
Chinese guys, at least the ones that I’ve met, have an amazing set of values.
They know what’s important to them and most of the time family is at the top of that list.
Seeing your Chinese boyfriend play with his little cousins and take care of them is going to melt your heart right then and there.
Cons
Societal pressure about marriage
China has a huge problem because of all the unmarried men who are looking for a wife.
The thing is, they most likely won’t find one. At least not in China.
Also, the age gap between wives and husbands is usually huge because men look for a younger woman, and woman look for older, more financially stable, men.
The situation is so dire that there are places called “marriage markets” where parents look for the future addition to their family.
You might be a bit surprised when your boyfriend immediately starts talking about marriage or having children, but that’s just normal in China.
2. Dating culture is different
In America, we do this whole elaborate dance when it comes to dating.
First, there’s the talking stage where we get to meet the person.
Then we go on dates to meet the person some more, and this can last for a while.
And then finally, we put a label on it and we become exclusive.
Well, in China it’s much more straightforward. It goes something like this:
You go on a date. You talk. You kiss. BAM! You’re boyfriend and girlfriend now. And you’re talking about marriage!
It definitely gets some getting used to, but you’ll find it refreshing in the end.
3. Lack of privacy
If your American or German boyfriend asked to go through your phone you would probably wreak havoc, throw a tantrum and accuse him of not trusting you.
And I understand you completely.
The first time that somebody asked to see my phone while I was in China completely threw me off. I was devastated. Why don’t they trust me?
It turned out to be a normal thing. They think that they got nothing to hide, so they might as well let you go through their phone.
I get where they’re coming from, but it still makes me feel weird and I don’t like it.
Where to meet Chinese men
If you’re getting ready to go to China and were wondering how to meet Chinese men I have some answers for you.
First of all, I will always be a fan of meeting somebody traditionally, by just approaching you and starting a conversation.
Call me a hopeless romantic, because that’s exactly what I am.
Most Chinese guys will have no trouble approaching you anyway. Also, to them you’re exotic and not something that they see often, just as they probably are to you.
Where to meet Chinese men? Anywhere, really. Love doesn’t choose a place. The street, the grocery store, the bar. Anywhere you want, really.
But if you’re more into dating websites and meeting somebody online, don’t worry. China has seen a huge growth in the number of users of dating websites.
So if you were wondering how to meet a Chinese guy online, I know some websites for you.
ChinaLoveCupid
Dating sites where you can meet handsome Chinese guys are ChinaLoveCupid, Tantan, Momo, Jiayuan, and other similar ones.
However, ChinaLoveCupid has to be the best option out of all of them, mainly because of the number of users and the fact that it’s targeted towards connecting Chinese people with Westerners.
The other websites also have a lot of users but most of them might stop trying to contact you once they realize that you can’t speak Chinese.
Signing up to ChinaLoveCupid is easy and free. You have to verify your email and profile photo and after that you’re almost ready to go.
Your profile should be filled with as much info as possible to better your chances of finding hot Chinese men to go on dates with.
You might think that a detailed profile isn’t important but think about it a bit. Would you feel comfortable contacting somebody online who doesn’t have anything about themselves on their profile except for their name and photo?
That sounds like a red flag to me, and it will be that way for everybody else. So get on it and fill out all of those questions.
Another reason why you should to that is the search engine that’s based on age, location and other things that people can search for.
The thing about this dating website is that it has more men than women using it. Now, some of them are Western, but you can use the search engine to search for your matches based on location pretty easily, so there are no worries about that.
Also, if you want access to some of the better features on this site you’re going to have to pay up.
For example, if you have the free membership you’re going to be able to chat and match only with premium members on the website, but if you get the premium membership you can chat with anyone.
This is a common case with plenty of websites though, but they’re one of the easiest places if you were wondering where to meet Chinese guys online.
How to conquer a Chinese man’s heart
Now that we went through all the basics we’re more than ready to get into action, or get some action.
I have some Chinese guy dating tips for you. Just keep reading to find out.
1. Show respect to his family
Family is the most important aspect of a Chinese man’s life and they would give their life for their family members.
That’s why you can’t disrespect them because you’ll only lose his respect and affection.
Also, just respect is not enough.
Show him that you care about the members of his family maybe just as much as he does. That will definitely win him over.
Needless to say, you can’t fake this. It will show.
You also have to display the love and respect that you have for your own family because that will show that you’re not only acting like this for show.
2. Make him some food
Try making him some food to win him over. It’s true what they say, the path to the man’s heart really is through his stomach.
It’s really important to prepare here. You can’t just go and make him mac and cheese and call it a day.
Remember, he comes from a completely different culture, and they eat completely different food.
In order to get everything right and really surprise him, try asking him subtly about what kind of food he likes.
Does he like it spicy, sweet or sour? What’s his favorite food? Which one of those things do you actually know how to make?
Finding the recipe for something that’s simple but sweet is easy. Now you just have to have patience and skill to make it taste as best as possible and he’ll be yours.
3. Give him compliments
Your Chinese boyfriend most likely won’t believe how lucky he is to have you, so give him true and sweet compliments to reassure him that you’re into him.
I don’t think that this is something that you should do out of pity just to boost their confidence, but do it when you genuinely feel like you should tell him those kinds of things.
Tell him if you think that he’s handsome, or strong, or that he’s really good at something that he does.
It’s just a normal thing that you should do in a relationship, but it goes a long way.
4. Learn the language
One of the biggest problems that you are bound to face when it comes to international dating is the language barrier.
The thing is, in China they don’t study English as much and a lot of people don’t speak it.
To show your man that you want to talk to him and understand him, learn some phrases and words in Chinese and then continue learning them.
I know that this can be a process, but get a dictionary or some classes and make him teach you some stuff.
Being able to communicate freely is just stress-free.
5. Show your love
Don’t be cold and don’t play hard to get.
We were thought to do those things to make guys chase us, but what’s actually important is to be honest.
And when you’re dating somebody you have to show them that you care about them or they’re just going to leave.
So show your Chinese boyfriend that you care about him. You can do this in any way you want, just remember to do it!
