What are Icelandic Men Like?
Before I had the chance to meet them in person I definitely heard some Icelandic men stereotypes but I’m happy to say that all of that is now debunked for good.
Handsome Icelandic men I had the chance to meet have shown me what they’re really like.
I’m guessing you’re similar to me and also love to explore the world and all it has to offer, and if that’s the case, international dating is definitely for you.
Today we’ll talk about Icelandic men and what they’re like.
Naturally, there is no way I could give you a description of each and every one of them, but I can try to paint a picture of what typical Icelandic guys are like.
Keep reading in case you’re, for example, one of many American women looking for Icelandic men.
I know what pops up in your mind when someone mentions sexy Icelandic men.
You probably instantly think about Vikings and their long, lush hair and beard, and you also picture a muscular, strong man.
Let me tell you the truth about how hot Icelandic men really look like.
If you’ve been imagining tall, muscular men, you’ve got the right idea! Icelandic men are actually among tallest men of the world. The average height is around 182cm, which makes them taller than German and Greek men.
They have muscular bodies, thanks to their genetics and love for physical activity.
You will notice that most hot Icelandic guys have pale skin that is complemented by their pale eyes, which are usually blue or green.
The hair colour of these handsome guys ranges from light blond over to red and light brown, which is common for northern nations, for example, Swedes or Norwegians.
Don’t be surprised when you notice men usually have long hair and/or beards – this is just them keeping alive their Viking physical characteristics.
Icelandic Men Style
It may surprise you that, even despite harsh conditions that are present in the region they live in, Icelandic men actually have a pretty good sense of style.
Of course, you will see them wearing layers of clothing that is suitable for cold conditions they’re in, but those layers are well matched and put together carefully.
Their style consists of jeans and trousers, shirts that are layered with knitted sweaters on top of them, and high-quality coats and winter jackets.
They mostly stick to neutral colours with every piece of clothing except sweaters – they can be in all colour combinations you could think of.
Of course, they often style the whole look with cold-weather accessories, such as gloves, scarves, hats and warm shoes or sneakers.
I’m sure you’re amazed by how good Icelandic men sound, but let’s be real, physical appearance and style are not everything. Let’s see what their character is like, and after that where to meet Icelandic men.
Additional Rating – The Tinder 1000 Swipe Rating
On top of the physical trait ratings for Icelandic we have also created our own additional rating from the Icelandic men we see on Tinder. We call it the 1,000 Tinder swipe rating. It is extremely accurate and gives a very good overall picture of the men and how attractive they are.
This is how it works.
We swiped through 1000 different profiles in all of the major cities of Iceland and took note of how many handsome men there are. We jotted down how many 8’s, 9’s and 10’s there are based on their profile pictures. Here is a quick breakdown.
- 0-100 is poor
- 100-200 is OK
- 200-300 is Good
- 300 – 400 Is Incredible
- 400 + is Mind blowing (There are only a few of these)

Character Traits that Make Icelandic Men Stand Out
Okay, now that we’re done with what are Icelandic guys like on the outside, it’s time to also look at the inside.
By that I mean their character traits, of course, since we all know good looks aren’t enough for a relationship to work.
Let me tell you, there is much more to sexy Icelandic guys that their looks and I’m going to tell you all about what to expect before you start dating an Icelandic man.
1. Gentlemen rating
Don’t start freaking out about my grade right away, let me explain first.
It’s not that you can’t expect Icelandic guys to be kind, polite and respectful to you, it’s just that they may not be the typical gentleman you’re familiar with since their dating culture is a bit different.
Icelandic people have a very casual approach when it comes to dating.
What I mean by that is that you’re very likely to find out what are Icelandic men in bed before you ever go on a date with one of them!
It’s very common for Icelanders to first hook up and then take the time to meet each other better (or don’t), so don’t expect your Icelandic guy to buy you expensive gifts, take you to fancy dates and write you poetry to win you over.
It’s more likely he will just ask you whether you want to get with him or not.
This bluntness can be a good thing – you won’t ever have to play games and guess if he likes you or not because you will definitively know.
Considering the size of Iceland and the fact that it’s an island, as well as the small population size of only 340 000 people, it’s self-explanatory that Icelandic man will be strongly connected to their country and their roots.
This has made Icelandic men very patriotic, which means that they cherish all their customs, traditions, food and everything else characteristic for Iceland only.
Naturally, they are also very close to their family, and considering the small number of people in the country, it also isn’t rare for them to know a lot of people in their city.
And they do love to talk about their country a lot, so get ready to learn a ton of new stuff!
If you find yourself in a situation where the Icelandic guy you hooked up the other night already has someone new after two days, don’t be shocked, that’s just how casual dating in Iceland is.
On the other hand, when you and your Icelandic guy have been together for a long time in a serious relationship, you can be sure he’s loyal to you and has eyes for you only.
Simply spare yourself the trouble of thinking an Icelandic man will be loyal to you from the first time you meet because it’s not going to happen.
With Icelandic men, there is no beating around the bush. They will tell you what they think the moment they think it, no matter what it is or what effect it could have.
I believe that this level of honesty is crucial for a relationship to work, and if you do, you’re in luck and should start thinking about how to meet Icelandic men.
On the other hand, this could be an issue to some ladies that prefer the truth to be sugar-coated, but we will all agree that it’s definitely better than dating a liar.
5. How protective they are?
In case you didn’t hear this fun fact before, Iceland is considered one of the safest countries of the world, so there is actually no need for your Icelandic boyfriend to be protective of you – even if you’re completely on your own, you will be fine.
But, let’s say you do get in a dangerous situation. There is no doubt you will be safe from any harm as long as your Icelandic man is there by your side.
6. Are they resourceful?
One interesting fact about the culture of Iceland is that a lot of Icelanders work at two or three jobs at the same time! They are very hardworking and love to stay busy and have stuff to do.
The reason behind this is in the conditions they live in – during long winter days it can get really depressing, so working more jobs simultaneously is one of the ways to fight that seasonal depression.
That being said, you can bet that your Icelandic guy will have enough resources in case you’re in need, but don’t count on him to pay for everything. Iceland is, after all, the number one country when it comes to gender equality, so you probably won’t be spoiled as much.
When compared to Korean men, for example, Icelandic men are definitely not mama’s boys and know how to take care of themselves and others.
Don’t worry, your Icelandic guy will know how to clean after themselves or cook a meal, since the culture of Iceland equals men and women, so there won’t ever be a time when you’ll have to be a mother to him.
At first glance, Icelandic men can seem as shy and reserved. That can be interpreted as they have no confidence, but let me assure you, that is not the case.
When they eventually come out of their shell and loosen up around you, you will see that they have no problem with approaching you on the street or in a pub and starting a conversation.
They do know how to keep the conversation alive, both by asking you questions and telling you about themselves, and will become more and more confident as they’re more comfortable around you.
After all, they do have Vikings blood in their veins, which they’re very proud of, and that gives them all the confidence they need to have.
9. Are they friendly or reserved?
You definitively couldn’t say that Icelandic men are reserved.
They are prepared to talk about themselves and their interests and love to hear about other people as well.
It can happen that they don’t open up that easily with foreigners, but once you’ve become close, expect nothing but friendliness and kindness from them.
Also, they are very straightforward, which can seem rude at times but is really just the way they are.
Their social life is very important to them, like to Colombians, so they plan various family and friends activities very often, from family dinners to going out and partying.
One of the most common Icelandic guy stereotypes is that they love to drink, a lot. Even though that can be said for the majority of them, there are of course those who are friendly and don’t drink as much.
Icelandic men are tall and muscular, they are among the tallest men of the world. Speaking of style, they are constantly on winter jackets due to their weather condition.
Icelandic men are not too gentle, they can be very blunt. Icelandic men are very honest men and can be trusted. They are naturally protective of their own. When it comes to trust and respect in a relationship, you can count on Icelandic men.
Pros and Cons of Dating an Icelandic man
1. You will always be treated with kindness
If you’re someone who loves to be treated with kindness and respect, dating an Icelandic guy will be an amazing experience for you.
It is well known that women and men have equal rights and status in society in Iceland, which means that women are free to do whatever they like, without being judged or restricted by the man.
You can expect nothing but love, compassion and admiration in your relationship with an Icelandic guy because he won’t look at you as someone beneath him, but as someone equal to him.
2. You will never be unsure about the relationship
Considering how direct Icelandic men are, there is no way you will ever have to guess what is on your Icelandic boyfriend’s mind and whether he would like to be with you or not.
Men from some other countries prefer to be mysterious when in a relationship just because they feel it will keep the spark alive, but don’t expect that from Icelandic guys.
While dating Icelandic men you will always know how they feel – simply because they will tell you.

They prefer open, direct communication and that’s what you’ll get in a relationship also, so forget about having to guess his intentions and thoughts.
3. You will feel relaxed and carefree
In case you have been wondering what are Icelandic guys like in relationships, let me tell you, it is like a walk in the park.
Typical Icelandic men live by the saying “it will all work out” and they never get upset over insignificant things.
When it comes to your relationship, being with someone so calm will surely result in you feeling relaxed at all time.
Even if you’re generally a person that stresses about everything, your Icelandic man will certainly help you see the good things in life more clearly and decrease your everyday stress levels.
1. They can be shy
Imagine this – you’re out on a date and your Icelandic guy is pretty quiet, seems nervous and you can get him to relax. Could it be that he’s just not into you?
Don’t worry, it’s not anything you’ve done – that’s simply the way they are.
Don’t be surprised if it turns out that handsome Icelandic guys tend to be shy and reserved at first. They do need a little bit extra time to loosen up around new people, but when they finally do, you’ll get to know how sweet and amazing they really are.
2. They can come off as rude
Don’t be shocked if you don’t get a “sorry” from the guy you bumped in in the street, or if your Icelandic boyfriend never says “please”.
It all comes down to the fact that Icelandic people like to get straight to the point of everything.
This is a common thing in Iceland, so don’t take it too personally or get offended by it. It’s just the way they are, and you’ll see that even though they come off as rude, they are actually decent and kind people that would help you anytime.
3. They are not serious about dating
As I mentioned previously, dating Icelandic guys can be described as casual rather than serious.
Of course, this in no way means that they’re not capable of committing to a serious relationship, it’s just that you should not have too high expectations at the very start of your international dating experience.
Casual dating can be a good thing that allows you to have fun without expecting too much, but if you’re more into courtship and slowly getting to know the person you’re with, Icelandic men may be too straightforward for you.
Where to Meet Icelandic Men
It would be totally understood if you’re already looking for a flight to Iceland after what I wrote about what are Icelandic men like.
And the best way to meet Icelandic men is exactly that – travelling the way I did and experiencing everything the country has to offer in person.
You can trust me. After all, the numerous international dating experiences I’ve had all over the world make me somewhat of an expert.
If you’re not currently able to arrange a trip to Iceland and experience the Icelandic dating culture firsthand, which would not only get you an Icelandic boyfriend but ton of amazing memories, don’t be sad just yet!
There are other ways to meet Icelandic guys that don’t include travelling, and even though I had the privilege to meet them in person, doesn’t mean you have to as well.
I searched for other dating possibilities so that you have where to meet Icelandic guys, and the internet offers a lot of opportunities, as always.
The most used dating app in Iceland and the one I would therefore recommend is Tinder.
Keep in mind that it does have a limited maximum distance of how far your matches are.
That is why I propose you invest in Tinder Plus if you’re asking yourself how to meet an Icelandic guy without flying to Iceland – this premium membership has the Passport option.
Passport option can be used for connecting with any desired city or country in the world and could be a great tool for you to explore profiles of single Icelandic guys without ever leaving your home.
How to Conquer an Icelandic Man’s Heart
Let me give you a couple of Icelandic men dating tips that helped me personally in my international dating experience.
I believe they will also help you in conquering single Icelandic men and their hearts.
1. Stay active
Here is one of the most important tips for dating an Icelandic man – don’t be afraid to get physical. And by that, I don’t mean just finding out how are Icelandic guys in bed, but also physical activity, preferably outdoors.
In Iceland, health is a big deal, and people try to do as much as possible to keep their health as good as it can be, through eating right and exercising.
Icelandic men love to stay active, and often enjoy sports and other physical activities, such as walking or hiking in their beautiful nature, so get out there and enjoy with your man while simultaneously improving your health.
2. Be adventurous
No matter if your Icelandic guy wants you to try shark meat, go hiking in the freezing cold or enjoy the Icelandic party lifestyle, try to let loose and give it all a go.
He will definitely value that you’re ready to experience his country to the fullest and try new things that are out of your comfort zone, and who doesn’t want to date someone who’s open to any new adventure?
3. Learn a couple of Icelandic words
This is good dating advice when it comes to international dating in any country, but it could work magic on Icelandic men.
Considering the fact that their nation has a rich, long history, they value and cherish every part of it, and their language is no exception from that. It is, after all, a language that hasn’t changed much for a very long period of time, which is impressive.
By learning a few words in Icelandic you will most definitely gain his admiration and respect, and eventually his heart as well!
4. Spend time with his family and friends
As previously mentioned, family bonds are super important to Icelandic men, and their social circles are big, so I really recommend you take part in all those activities if you want to win him over.
This has to be one of
my most important Icelandic guy dating tips since you will see for yourself how
much time your Icelandic guy spends with his family and friends. You wouldn’t
want to miss out on all that fun, right?
Take part in all family dinners and nights out with his group of friends, and enjoy getting to know everyone, and he will certainly like you more because of that.
