This isn’t a site that someone who just wants to meet up with others online, or is looking for long-term love is going to frequent.

That’s because, in terms of niche sites, you just don’t get more niche than Furfling.

This means that Furfling is not your everyday dating site (like Tinder or eHarmony) neither is it a hookup site (like BeNaughty or Ashley Madison).

So who is it aimed at then?

Well, the target market is a subculture who call themselves Furries.

And what are Furries?

Well, Furries are people who have an interest in various animal characters.

But these characters not only have human characteristics but human personalities as well.

The characters that furries generally love will:

• Speak like humans
• Have human facial expressions, for example, they can smile
• Have human emotions
• Walk on two legs
• Wear clothes

Ok, so now you get the idea as to what it is that furries love it’s critical to understand that they will often come up with their own Furries characters themselves.

Furfling is a dating site then that helps bring Furries together.

Who can join?

Obviously, you have to be a Furry and have an interest in this subculture to want to use the site, otherwise, there is no point in joining.

The site is therefore aimed at anyone who has an interest in the Furry subculture.

You can be straight or gay, just want to hook up or be looking for long-term love, it doesn’t matter at all.

Just as long as you are a Furry, that’s all that counts.

User numbers and gender breakdown

So with such a niche site, you already know that the number of users is never going to be huge.

We not talking millions here at all.

And while I would have expected only maybe tens of thousands, FurFling actually has around 150 000 users.

That’s not too bad considering the site only started in 2012.

While it was difficult to find a gender ratio breakdown, the Furry movement itself is dominated more by males than females, usually about 4:1.

And you can therefore expect the same when it comes to users on the website as well.

I was unable to find a breakdown of the age ranges of users on the site.

But I would hazard a guess that you would find users of all ages, seeing as the Furry movement started in earnest in the 1970s, close to 50 years ago.

Ease of Use

The Furfling website has a very unique signing on process.

There is no app to use here and you cannot log in using your social media accounts.

When signing up, you are taken to a single page where you need to fill in a fair bit of information about yourself.

This includes:

• A username
• Password
• Location
• Email
• Your gender
• The gender you are looking for
• When you were born

You also need to upload your photo and check the tickbox that confirms you have read the terms and conditions of the site.

Note, you have to include a profile picture, you cannot signup if you don’t have one.

Also, as Furfling sends you a validation email that you need to reply to, your email must be valid too.

Fleshing out your profile

Before we get into how Furfling looks and operates, let’s talk about your profile.

When you log in, you are taken to a general page.

One of the tabs you will find here takes you to your profile.

It’s not a very long one either.

The only information you need to provide over and above what you already have is you:

• Height
• Weight
• Eye color
• Hair color
• Ethnicity
• Fursona Name
• Species (for example, wolf, fox, bird, rabbit, dragon and many more)
• An “about me” section
• An “I am looking for” section

There’s not a lot going on here when compared to other dating sites and the extensive profiles they offer but that’s not always a bad thing.

The essentials are certainly there, however.

Furfling’s site design and finding your way around

On the whole, Furfling’s site design is nothing spectacular.

Functional is the best word to describe it.

It’s bright enough, thanks to its black, orange and red color scheme and includes a simple menu system at the top of the screen that you will use to find your way around.

These are:

• Profile: Takes you back to your profile
• Messages: Messages you send and receive are found here
• Media: This is where you can create photo albums and view them
• Networks: Includes others you’ve hooked up or hook up requests you sent or received as well as a list of users who have visited your profile.
• Settings: Here you can make adjustments to your account, notifications and privacy settings or you can upgrade your membership.
• Search: You can’t miss this big red button. This is where you launch all your searches.

Overall, Furfling is so easy to use and navigate so you won’t have any problems in that regard.

If you’ve used a dating site before, well then everything is where you’d expect it to be.

Even if you haven’t used one before, the simplicity of the design means that within a few minutes, you will have an idea of where everything is.

Effectiveness

Now I can tell you one thing, I didn’t expect to find any users that would be close to my location when I searched for matchups on Furfling.

That’s because I live in a very small town.

But sure enough, Fufling managed to turn up at least five users for me to follow up on when I conducted my first search.

The search engine itself isn’t really anything that impressive.

The basic search options are:

• What you are looking for
• The age range the matchup returns should be
• Their location (you can specify a country, state and city

Additional search options include:

• Usernames
• If they are online or not
• If they have pictures or not
• The way you want searches returned to you (either detailed list or in a gallery)

And that’s it.

You also have the option of saving the searches you make but there are so few parameters to fill in that I don’t really see the need for it.

As I have said, while the user base isn’t massive on Furfling, I was able to find some matchups to follow up on.

But how do you get in contact with them?

Reaching out to others

I was really surprised when I found that one of the ways to reach out to others on the site was free.

Basically, this is an email styled messaging system where you can send a message and they can reply.

In total, you can send 100 000 messages like this and the site even tracks that data for you.

So yes, you can make effective contact with people in this manner!

How refreshing!

There is another way to chat in realtime, however.

That’s instant messaging which is a member-only feature.

But well done to the folk at Furfling for at least allowing users to get into contact with each other for free, even though it’s a fairly slow messaging system.

If you’d like you can also break the ice with other users in two ways.

First, you could send them a wink.

It’s a way of flirting that many dating websites use and if someone flirts back, you know they have some interest.

Or you can request a hook up.

That’s just a way of saying you’d really like to get to know them better.

Receive one back and you should be firing off messages, that’s for sure.

Furfling does offer membership to those users who want to experience a little more from the site.

Let’s take a look at all the membership features on offer when you opt to sign up for that membership.

1. Instant messages

So while it’s awesome to be able to send messages free of charge to other users, the system that allows you to do that isn’t the fastest.

It’s basically like waiting for a return email.

As a member, however, you don’t need to worry about using it.

Instead, you can use Furfling’s instant messaging system which essentially operates as a private chat room.

It’s a far quicker way to get to know someone, that’s for sure.

2. Extra search options

I’ve already mentioned how based the search options you have at your disposal on FurFling.

There are just not that many parameters you can set as a regular user.

Luckily, if you choose to become a member, you have a few more that you can change if you want to.

These are based on profile information, for example, height, weight, eye color, hair color and others like that.

3. Upload and view photos

As a member of Furfling, you can upload up to 100 photos to your profile.

Better still, you can also see the photos other members have uploaded.

Regular users can only see someone’s profile picture.

4. See who visited your profile

Want to know who may have viewed your profile?

As a member, this information is available to you.

And it’s always nice to know who has shown an interest in you, isn’t it?

5. No restrictions on hook ups

Unlike regular users, a member doesn’t face any restrictions on the number of hook ups they can have with other users.

Pricing

There are not that many key features on the site if I am honest.

Of course, the ability to instant message people is more than useful and it’s nice seeing other members’ photos.

But how much are you going to be charged for the privilege?

Well, let’s look at the membership packages that Furfling offers.

First up, it’s important to note that there are two different membership options: Silver and Gold.

Of course, the Gold membership opens all the doors in terms of the key features available on the site, while Silver offers less.

Here’s a breakdown of what Silver membership is going to cost you:

• 3-day trial – $3 (if not canceled, you will be billed $19 per month )
• 3-month membership – $39 ($13 per month)
• 6-month membership – $66 ($11 per month)

And what about Gold membership?

Here’s a breakdown of the membership package that provides all the features:

Trial memberships are what all dating sites should have in my opinion.

That’s because they let you take a good look around, try out what’s on offer and then decide if you’d like to sign up for longer.

I am convinced that those dating sites that don’t offer them could get far more users turning to membership if they did.

In terms of the prices, there is nothing to complain about, that’s for sure.

While this is a very niche dating site – and sometimes that can mean higher membership fees – Furfling has kept their prices extremely low.

Conclusion and Overall Rating

Without a doubt, this is one of the most unique dating sites I have ever seen.

But that stands to reason, I guess, especially as it’s designed to be a site for a specific subculture.

To be honest, I was impressed that in the few short years it has been around, that it could generate so many users.

In fact, I never expected to find any near my small town, yet there were two pages of matchups by the time I completed my search.

Furfling is a site that’s easy to register for and even easier to use.

There are no frills here, it’s all about connecting like-minded people and that it does well.

I’ve seen some complaints about bot profiles but you get those on every site.

And the fact that you can use a free email message system to chat with other users is really impressive indeed.

You are limited to 100 000 messages but that’s a huge amount.

Of course, there are key features that you might be interested in and for those, you’d have to sign up for membership.

The packages themselves are more than fairly priced but the key features aren’t really anything to write home about, other than an instant messaging system that speeds everything up in terms of connecting with someone.

So onto my rating for Furfling.

I am going to give it 3.6 out of 5.
