TG Personals is an online dating site for both Transgenders and those who’d like to date them.

The latter group is commonly called Cisgender and is described on the site and elsewhere online as “a person whose gender identity corresponds with their biological sex assigned at birth.”

The first thing that struck me when I was conducting research into the site is the fact that it’s free.

In fact, a banner on the TG Personals landing page says the site is “100% free and always will be”.

Now that’s a noble cause but how did it come about?

Well, TG Personals is owned by Mike Kasper, who has run the site since 1999, often at his own expense.

He sees it as a labor of love but one that the Transgender community needs.

The site itself is not only a dating site, however (like eHarmony or Tinder).

Many of those using it do so for casual hook ups and no-strings-attached encounters (like BeNaughty or Ashley Madison).

So now we know a little more about the site, let’s look into some numbers behind it.

What are the user numbers of TG Personals like?

Although this is a very niche-specific dating site, in my research I found out that TG Personals has close to 200 000 active users.

• Almost three-quarters of the users are from the United States
• Close to 500 users log in each day
• That’s 3 500 a week and 14 000 each month

Age ranges of TG Personals

Now let’s get into a breakdown of the age ranges of users of TG Personals.

The most popular age group on the site is the 25-34-year-olds.

In fact, they make up 40% of all the users on TG Personal.

Next up are the 35-44-year olds who comprise 30% of all users.

So between those two groups, you have 70% of TG Personals user base.

Here’s a full breakdown of the age ranges you will find from most active in terms of users to least active.

Before we move onto how registering for the site and how it works, there something else about TG Personals that you should know.

Because it’s a free datings site, not all of the profiles on it are Transgenders or people looking to date them.

It’s important that when you come across them, you report them.

Because TGPersonals is free, it is run by volunteers so the staff complement isn’t there to police the site like a regular dating site.

Users play a massive role in helping out with report fake profiles and scammers.

Ease of Use

Well we know it’s a free dating website but just how easy is it to register for and then set up your profile on TG Personals?

The first step to getting online is registering your profile.

While TG Personals has an app and you can register for the site using it, I struggled to find it on Google Play but more about the app later.

I began the registration process through the website and it was an easy enough experience.

Let’s talk you through it.

When you first see the website, you’d be forgiven for thinking that you can immediately start browsing.

It presents you with a search engine on the left-hand side as well as a photo gallery of the newest members to join as well as those who are recently active.

Clicking on any of these or trying to make use of the search engine will take you to the registration page.

Or perhaps, unlike me, you noticed on the left-hand side of the page the small tab that you need to click to register.

Either way, you do need to do so in order to begin the process of getting your profile up and running.

Registering on the site

Registering for TGPersonals is only going to take a few moments out of your day.

First up, you will need to provide the following:

• A display name
• Your email address
• Username (which is visible on your profile)
• Password
• The headline to your profile
• Details to fill in an “about me” section
• Birthdate
• Gender (options include Cis man/woman, Transgender man/woman, Non-binary)
• Interested in (options include Cis man/woman, Transgender man/woman, Non-binary and you may click more than one)
• Looking for (options are friendship, love, sex, roommates)
• Zipcode (for US residents)
• City
• State/nation

While it’s a lot more than you would normally have to fill in for other dating sites, it going to take no more than five minutes max to do so.

And yes, your email must be valid because you can only activate your account on the site by replying to an email that TG Personals sends to you.

As soon as you reply to that email, you are taken back to the TG Personals site where you can log in for the first time.

Note, you may not be able to log in successfully straight away.

That’s become admin on the site have to validate your account first which is an excellent security feature that not many other dating sites even have.

TG Personals: Overall look and finding your way around

While TG Personals isn’t going to win any design awards, it has a very effective modular design that’s so easy to navigate.

You will immediately notice the option to search for matchups on the left-hand side of the screen.

I will talk more about searching later in the review, however.

You are presented with a range of profiles in the middle of the screen of the newest and recently active members that you are welcome to click through.

On the right-hand side, you will see advertising.

Of course, as this is a free site, advertising is an important revenue generator for TG Personals.

And it’s handled perfectly.

By that I mean, it’s there but not in your face like so many dating websites.

You will also find some advertising, mostly for live cam sites under the search section on the left and below the profiles in the middle.

Again, it takes up very little space and isn’t in your face at all.

Navigating the site is primarily achieved through the menus that you will find at the top of the page.

And there are quite a few of them:

• TS Local Dating: This takes you to TS Dates, another dating site for Transgenders
• Live Cam: This takes to TSMates, a live cam website
• Activity: This shows your activity on the site in terms of users becoming friends. It’s a social networking aspect to TS Personals.
• Blogs: Fancy blogging or read those of other users? You can here but note, that many members use blog posts as personals
• Matches: Click here for a roulette-style match game where you can view other users of the site
• Members: Here you can view members of the site in four ways – newest, alphabetical, popular and online
• News: This is a link to all the news regarding the site in the form of admin blogs
• Photos: Under this menu, you can view all the photos that other users post to the site
• Search: Brings you back to the main search screen that lists the newest and recently active members

Setting up your profile

Now you’ve probably wondered why I’ve left the profile section till last.

Well, other than uploading pictures, there is nothing much left for you to do when it comes to your profile.

During the registration process, you’ve filled in all you needed for it.

Yes, it’s pretty minimal.

Is there an app for TG Personals?

If you’d prefer to use TG Personals from your smartphone, it has an app for both Apple and Android handsets.

Don’t search for TG Personals when trying to download it, however.

You won’t find it.

That’s because on both the Google Play Store and the Apple iStore the app is actually called Transgndr.

The overall look of the app is identical to the website and it operates in much the same way as well.

There is more emphasis on matchups and that’s presented in a roulette-style game where you can swipe left or right, depending on if you like a person or not.

Effectiveness

Let’s be honest, any dating website is always going to be measured by just how effective it is in helping to bring you the types of matchups that you are looking for.

And it’s the site search engine that’s the main tool that you’d use to do this, right?

So how does TG Personals search engine work and what type of results does it bring?

Searching for love on TG Personals

There’s not a lot going on when it comes to the search engine you will find at TG Personals.

That’s because there aren’t that many parameters you can change when searching for potential matchups.

All of that is probably related to the fact that profiles on TG Personals are so minimal.

So then what parameters can you set?

These are your options:

• Your gender
• What you are interested in (options include Cis man/woman, Transgender man/woman, Non-binary and you may click more than one)
• Age ranges
• What you are looking for (options are friendship, love, sex, roommates)
• Location
• If they have pictures or not
• Returns sorted by newest members or last visit to the site

And that’s it.

But in truth, it’s more than enough to provide you with the kind of returns you’d want based on what you are looking for, for example, a casual hook up, friendship and even long term love.

Contacting other users

So the search engine has returned a bunch of matchups and you’ve gone through them all.

One, in particular, stands out.

Not only are they just what you are looking for, but their location is also nearby to you as well.

How do you go about contacting them?

Well, you have more than one option.

In fact, you have three:

• Messages: Yes, just like all dating sites, TG Personals relies on message sending as the most popular and easiest way of getting into contact with someone you’d like to get to know better.
• Crush: You can add someone as a “crush”. They will be notified of this and should they then do the same back to you, the pair of you become a match and then will feature on your match list.
• Friend them: There is a slight social networking aspect to TG Personal as you can “friend” profiles of people that you like. It’s for them to decide if they approve this friend request or not.

Of the three, obviously messaging is the most popular because it allows you to engage in a conversation with someone.

And ultimately, that’s the best way to get to know them better, that’s for sure.

I mentioned blogs and while it’s not an official contact channel for users, some do use blogs as personal ads to meet like-minded individuals, so you can use them in that way or see if you can find potential matchups there as well.

So while you don’t need to pay anything to use TG Personals, there are still a number of key features that the site offers users.

Many dating sites, especially those that have been around for a long time like TG Personals have had to modernize thanks to smartphones.

That’s because, with this technology rival sites, ones that take the forms of apps and use roulette-style matches, have exploded in popularity over the last decade.

So if you can’t beat them at it, you better make sure you offer something similar.

And TG Personals has done just that.

It’s the perfect way to go through profiles quickly find the ones you’d like to get to know a little better, if they match with you, of course.

While the blogs aren’t always used in the right way by users, there are some who have interesting takes on life, dating and other topics.

It’s well worth your while taking your time to look through these blogs, yes even those that people use as personal ads.

Not many dating sites let you see a host of photos posted by other users and if they do, it’s always behind a paywall

There’s no need to get your credit card out whatever language you say it in.

Keeping to his promise, for the last two decades, the man behind TG Personals, Mike Kasper, has kept it free and intends to do so in the future.

And well done to him!

It can’t be easy and yes, while there is advertising on site that must help him pay the bills, it really isn’t in your face.

So many other sites could learn from this.

Some even after charging a membership fee the advertising keeps coming.

Is it really necessary?

Conclusion and Overall Rating

And so we come to the end of this review of TG Personals.

What a truly unique site it is.

Of course, the main advantage to users is the fact that it costs you nothing.

While it’s perhaps not as sophisticated in its workings as other paying dating websites, it has everything you need if you are Transgender and looking for love or a casual hook up or someone who wants to date one.

I would prefer if profiles were a little more detailed if only to allow more search parameters because at the moment, the searching mechanism is fairly basic.

Having said that, it does get the job done, for the most part, especially if you are in a larger metropolitan area.

And if I had to be picky, well there aren’t that many features either but that’s to be expected.

It’s a free site after all.

Overall, I would give TG Personals a rating of 3.75 out of 5.
