What are Finnish Men Like?
Finnish men are usually an enigma for the majority of ladies around the world. That’s why I was so surprised to hear the interest of so many American women looking for Finnish men.
A few days ago, after a conversation I had with some friends, I started thinking about my encounter with Finnish guys, and I have to admit that I usually had a very pleasant experience while dating them.
That’s why I’ve decided to put an end to this mystery surrounding them, and tell you as much as I know about typical Finnish men and share some tips for dating a Finnish man.
Finnish males very often get mixed with Swedes because they do have similar genetics (around 75%), and both nations are rather pale, blond, and very tall.
What’s interesting to notice about typical Finnish guys is that they usually have very fine hair, and that’s why they keep it short in most cases.
However, this doesn’t mean that the facial hair is lacking, on the contrary. So, if you like your sexy Finnish men bearded, you’re in for a treat!
Another very attractive characteristic is the bone structure of their face that’s very masculine, with the strong, sexy jawline and brow bone. Their eyes are almost always blue or light-gray while being smaller and mysterious.
The majority of Finns are blond and tall, but their race is not homogeneous. It’s actually a mixture of about five different ethnic groups, which means that there’s a possibility to meet Finnish guys that have brown hair and that aren’t too tall.
I’ve noticed that Finns are probably the “darkest” among the Nordic races, which means that they could easily be everyone’s cup of tea if you’re someone who doesn’t like blond men.
Personally, I enjoy their physical appearance very much, especially the height. It’s very rare to meet a very short guy there. Also, they are pretty slim and fit, and don’t get obese, which is another big plus!
Finns like to dress casually, and they mostly dislike being overly dressed-up, which I find very sexy.
Similarly to other Nordic countries, handsome Finnish guys always look clean and put-together without trying too hard and looking ridiculously sharp or uptight (as some Italians can be, let’s be honest!).
So, if you were wondering “what are Finnish guys like when it comes to clothing and style,” you can rest assured that there won’t be any (unpleasant) surprises when it comes to fashion. He’ll even accept your fashion-related advice at any time.

Even if your Finnish boyfriend earns a lot, he most likely won’t spend too much on clothes and shoes. However, this doesn’t mean that they look sloppy. They somehow manage to manifest the ideal amount of “casual” while still looking professional and serious.
While dating a Finnish guy, you’ll almost always see him in pants or jeans, a simple t-shirt, and some comfy shoes.
When it comes to formal occasions, they go with a simple shirt and sometimes a comfy jacket, and that’s it!
Additional Rating – The Tinder 1000 Swipe Rating
On top of the important physical trait ratings for Finnish men, we have also created our own additional rating from the Finnish men we see on Tinder. We call it the 1,000 Tinder swipe rating. It is extremely accurate and gives a very good overall picture of the single men and how attractive they are.
This is how it works.
We swiped through 1000 different profiles in all of the major cities of Finland and took note of how many handsome men there are. We jotted down how many 8’s, 9’s and 10’s there are based on their profile pictures. Here is a quick breakdown.
- 0-100 is poor
- 100-200 is OK
- 200-300 is Good
- 300 – 400 Is Incredible
- 400 + is Mindblowing (There are only a few of these)
With a Tinder Plus subscription, you can teleport to anywhere in the world and swipe for yourself. Find out more below In the section about how to meet Finnish men. Also, make sure to check out my other country guides to see how their Tinder scores compare.
Character Traits that Make Finnish Men Stand Out
When talking to my friends, I was so surprised to hear about all the Finnish men stereotypes, which actually got me thinking about my experiences.
After listening to their assumption that the majority of Finns are cold, distant, and even aggressive, I’ve decided it’s high time someone did them some justice.
Today, you’re about to find out as much as possible about them, all the details, personality traits as well as what are Finnish men like in relationships.
1. Gentlemen rating
You must be wondering, “If dating a Finnish man is so great, how come their score for being gentlemen is only 8?” and it’s perfectly understandable you may think that.
While being very nice, polite and pleasant to talk to, Finns don’t really have the specific gender roles as the majority of the world does. Now, I don’t think that’s a bad thing, on the contrary.
The only drawback of their attitude may be the lack of “gentlemen behavior” that some ladies are used to.
Personally, I don’t mind getting my own coat and opening the door by myself. Still, I know that for some of my girlfriends, that’s unacceptable, especially on the first dates.
One of them even got really angry at a guy for not offering to pay the bill once they went out. She felt so offended that she gave him an attitude for the rest of the date.
I love my friend so much, but I honestly told her that she was exaggerating and owed him an apology. That’s why I don’t think that she would enjoy dating Finnish men at all.
That’s why, in order to make these Finnish men dating tips as objective as possible, I had to give them an 8 for their gentlemen rating.
Also, they are very shy and can’t flirt, even when they are very attractive, which I very often find cute. But if you’re expecting to go to a bar/pub/club and have hot Finnish guys hitting on you non-stop, you’ll be disappointed.
This is a refreshment compared to Brazilian or Italian guys that just won’t leave you alone even when you say “no” a million times.
Finnish guys prefer being friends first and having a normal conversation with you before asking you out.
However, when it comes to Finnish men in bed, I must admit that they are very gentle and patient. They will never rush you or insist on doing something you don’t like.
When you meet Finnish men, you’ll notice right off the bat that they’re very respectful and don’t mind if you initiate the conversation or make the first step, just like the Austrian guys.
Even though Finns aren’t nationally pure but the mix between 5 different ethnicities, hence the variety when it comes to looks, they do have a very strong sense of national identity.
They are always proud of their roots and love being recognized for the success of their athletes, especially rally drivers.
And while they usually don’t expect anyone to know about their country’s achievements and very often assume no one actually knows about them, Finns love reading about Finland in a foreign country, and they feel very proud.
One thing surprised me a lot when I was hanging out with my Finnish boyfriend’s friends. On one occasion, we started to talk about politics, and they got very passionate about the good and the bad in their country.
And while they openly had a few critiques towards Finland (as any nation has towards its own country), they got immediately offended when another foreign friend joined them.
I found this super-strange and asked my boyfriend about it. He admitted that they often react like that when visitors have complaints.
It’s a common stereotype to think that just because Finns don’t talk a lot and seem a bit reserved that they lie or hide something. I have to admit that I had a similar opinion before dating them.
What I discovered is that they are very respectful towards the partner. Even though they find small talk unnecessary, when it comes to important things regarding the relationships, they will feel free to share their emotions.
That’s why they are usually very loyal and try their best to make the relationship work. Of course, there are always examples of Finns that cheat, but those are very rare situations.
If it happens that your Finnish boyfriend cheats on you, he’ll most likely tell you right away and end the relationship.
After a couple of months, they can usually already tell if the relationship is serious or not and end it if they don’t think it’ll work.
So, if you were worried about what are Finnish guys like in relationships, rest assured that they will treat you as a friend first, which means that they will be loyal and honest if they want something serious with you.
As said, your Finnish date/partner will be completely honest with you in every aspect of life. You won’t have to worry about what’s on his mind because he’ll share it with you sooner or later.
Even though they are quiet and sometimes seem reserved, the problems will be solved through honest conversations.
And while they may not share their emotions every second of the day and tell you “I love you” whenever they see you, they will prove it through little things and complete honesty in your relationship (both friendly and romantic).
5. How protective they are?
I have to be honest, this is one of the traits that I still can’t figure out quite right myself. I’ve never witnessed any unpleasant situation where I could determine “what are Finnish men like,” in that sense.
Having said that, one thing’s for sure, I always felt safe when I was with my Finnish boyfriend. So, I suppose they are protective, or at least they make you feel safe and sound, which is also an admirable characteristic.
6. Are they resourceful?
One of the best qualities of Finnish guys is that they are hard-working, professional, and very often perfectionists. This means that they give 100% at work and try to provide a decent life for their family.
While Finns don’t have gender roles that *must* be respected, but they give their best both at work and home with house chores, they still like to bring money to the table and have enough for a nice life.
Also, women are expected to work too, since gender equality is a completely normal thing there.
Another reason why Finns like to earn a lot of money is their love for traveling as well as sports such as skiing and rally, which are expensive.
I have to admit that the deepest conversations I had were with Finns. Everything A to Z about them is the reflection of mature and serious thoughts and behavior.
Your Finnish guy may not speak a lot and seem silent, but he’ll surely know how to have a mature conversation when needed. So, expect grown-up, serious attitude towards important things in life.
It may seem unusual, but another sign of maturity for me is the ability to laugh at yourself.
Let me explain it a bit better.
All the Finns I dated had a more-or-less realistic image of themselves. If they consider something a flaw, they don’t get mad when someone mentions it, but they join and make jokes about it.
I consider this a big plus, and that’s one of their best traits, in my opinion.
It’s such a shame that Finnish guys don’t have higher self-confidence because they definitely have reasons for it. They are almost always very shy, especially around new people.
This often stops them from making the first step even if they happen to like you. This is good to know if you’re wondering how to meet a Finnish guy. The problem is, he probably won’t approach you, but will look at you from time to time and then look away as soon as you notice.
So if you’re wondering how to meet Finnish men if they’re so shy, the best thing to do is to make the first step yourself. I know it can be a bummer, but it’s very often the only solution to meet cute Finns.
When talking about Finnish guys in bed, the shyness disappears, and they become very confident in what they are doing, without worrying about whether they’re good or not. They know they are!
9. Are they friendly or reserved?
Well, when it comes to Finnish guy stereotypes, more precisely the one that claims that Finns are a very cold nation, I have to say that this is only part-true. While they are reserved when around both new people as well as friends, this doesn’t mean that they are unfriendly and rude.
This can also be considered a product of their already mentioned shyness. They aren’t like Spanish or Latinoamerican guys who’ll hug you and act as if they were your BFFs the first time they see you, on the contrary.
But once you pass that formal behavior and start hanging out more often, your Finnish guy will loosen up and be more relaxed and funny. They really love making jokes and laughing, and you’ll understand their peculiar sense of humor after a while.
They aren’t big fans of small-talks and don’t have a problem with being silent around others.
Finnish men are not finicky or naive; they are as intelligent as they are romantic. From the icy capes in Helsinki to the many restaurants and bars, you will find these outdoor-loving dudes everywhere.
Gorgeous as they may seem, there is more that stand them out from their peers in the Scandinavian region of Europe. Having gotten used to the cold region, they are now masters in relationships heated with love, emotion, and lots of laughter.
Whether you are looking for a fling or truly desire to settle down with some of Europe’s most admired men, Finland is surely going to meet your expectations.
I find some things a bit off, though. Want to know if there are any drawbacks dating one of Finland’s handsome men?
Read on to find out.
Pros and Cons of Dating a Finnish Man
If international dating has taught me one thing, it’s that all nations have both pros as well as cons when it comes to dating. Now it’s time to talk about all the advantages and disadvantages of dating Finnish guys.
Check them out!
1. Help with housework
From my experience, both single Finnish men, as well as taken ones, enjoy house chores very much. They find vacuuming particularly interesting, which I appreciated a lot since I really hate it!
You won’t have to worry about whether or not your bae will be a slob because he’ll be happy to clean the house with you. As a matter of fact, you won’t even have to ask him because he’ll probably start cleaning on his own.
2. They believe in gender equality
This is probably the best thing about Finns.
There’s nothing worse than a man who expects his girlfriend or wife to be at home 24/7, only taking care of kids and not having any personal life (like an Indian guy I once dated). Thankfully, Finns are the polar opposite.
Your Finnish sweetheart will be glad to raise kids with you and spend time with them while you’re out with friends. He’ll also gladly help with cleaning, cooking, ironing, etc.
3. Expect the unconditional support
No matter how hard of a situation you find yourself in, or how sad you are, your Finnish guy will be there to offer a shoulder to cry on. He’ll comfort you and try to make you feel better.
Also, when you have a dream you want to make a reality, or any business endeavor, the career you want to pursue, he will support you and be of big help along the way.
1. They love drinking
Finns do have a reputation for being alcohol lovers, which can be a big turn-off for some gals. I personally don’t mind it as long as it’s not changing his behavior and becoming an addiction, in which case I really can’t accept it.
But if you’re really against drinking, you may find it challenging to find a Finnish guy who doesn’t like to have a glass or two while partying.
2. Fast driving
Being adventurous and proud of their rally drivers, Finnish people, in general, like to drive fast, when allowed. They also adore extreme sports and are big fans of winter sports such as skiing, snowboarding, etc.
They love speed, and this, to me, is a bit scary because I prefer safe rides no matter what. This was the main reason for the arguments I had with my Finnish dates, so I thought it was an important thing to point out.
Where to Meet Finnish Men
One of the most challenging tasks when it comes to international dating is to figure out where to meet certain nationalities if you live in America. Since we are talking about Finns here, you’re probably wondering where to meet Finish guys.
Since they are shy, as I’ve mentioned more than once, expecting from single Finnish guys to approach you and start a conversation would mean losing too much time and ending up disappointed.
Other than adding random Finns on Facebook and Instagram, you can easily meet single Finns on Tinder as well as by using the http://finlandfriendsdate.com/ because, in my opinion, it’s the best dating site if you want to know where to meet Finnish men online.
How to Conquer a Finnish Man’s Heart
Do you already have a sweet Finnish guy in mind and want to seduce him? Let your dear international dating expert help you with the following Finnish guy dating tips!
1. Spend time outdoors
Finns are outdoorsy people, and they spend time in nature whenever they have free time. The best way of bonding with your Finnish bae and seducing him would be by going hiking with him, or generally spending time outdoors whenever you get the chance.
A lot of Finns have cabins in the woods or somewhere far from the city. Since nature in Finland is so captivating, it’s only logical that they prefer being outdoors.
2. Respect their quiet nature
Since Finns are quiet and dislike small talk, your sweetheart would really appreciate it if you understood that and weren’t pushy to make him talk. Enjoy some quiet time without worrying about it too much.
3. Go to the sauna with him
Sauna is a must in every Finnish household, and they really enjoy it a lot.
Why not spend some relaxing time with your boyfriend in a cozy sauna while having deep conversations about the universe? So romantic, in my opinion!
