I believe that I’m the kind of person who was lucky enough to get the opportunity to experience many cultures and people, but the one place that holds a special place in my heart is Japan.
If you are new here, make sure to check out all the men’s country guides to see how Japanese men compare in all categories
The food, the history, the vibrant cities… and Japanese men.
So, if you’re wondering what are Japanese men like or if you need some Japanese men dating tips, your girl is here to help you out.
What are Japanese Men Like?
If you’re currently speculating about what kind of water you’re getting into when it comes to dating Japanese men you probably saw something (or someone) that fascinated you enough to want to do some research.
If you’re looking for a short answer – Japanese guys are great and you should totally go for it!
But if you actually want to know more about what are Japanese men like in relationships and in general, keep reading!
One of the biggest Japanese men stereotypes has to be that they all look the same, along with people from other Asian countries.
While saying that can make you look ignorant, there’s also this thing called the cross-race effect which makes it easier for you to recognize the faces of the people who belong to a race that you’re used to seeing.
So if you’re Caucasian it’s going to be easier for you to differentiate between people of your own race, but it’s just a thing that takes some getting used to.
That being said, if you’re not Asian chances are that some of them feel the same way about you.
But, let’s talk about what typical Japanese men look like.
Of course, every person is different in some way, but there are some things that all Japanese guys have in common.
Japanese males are around the same height as a typical European woman, with an average height of 5’ 7.4’’ (171.2 cm), but studies over the years have shown that they are getting taller.
Some of the characteristics that typical Japanese guys have are straight black hair, flat nose, prominent cheekbones, and those dreamy oblique eyes, but there are always exceptions.
Japanese Men Style
If you were to find the most adequate word to describe Japanese guys and their style- perhaps distinctive does the job.
Unlike numerous nations where dressing a bit feminine clothes would be seen as shocking, taboo, or whatever, these oriental cuties have no problem wearing whatever they want.
They are extremely creative and willing to combine various styles and unusual colors, which usually results in something unique and artistic.
This is particularly seen in bigger cities, where people are generally more open to new ideas and like to push fashion limits.
There’s still a lot of differences between them, especially depending on which part of Japan they’re from, so don’t be surprised when you start noticing some of those!
But if you want to succeed in international dating, you can’t just base everything on the way that people look, so I singled out some key characteristics that we can look into.
Additional Rating – The Tinder 1000 Swipe Rating
On top of the physical trait ratings for Japanese men, we have also created our own additional rating from the Japanese men we see on Tinder. We call it the 1,000 Tinder swipe rating. It is extremely accurate and gives a very good overall picture of the men and how attractive they are.
This is how it works.
We swiped through 1000 different profiles in all of the major cities of Japan and took note of how many handsome men there are. We jotted down how many 8’s, 9’s and 10’s there are based on their profile pictures. Here is a quick breakdown.
- 0-100 is poor
- 100-200 is OK
- 200-300 is Good
- 300 – 400 Is Incredible
- 400 + is Mindblowing (There are only a few of these)
With a Tinder Plus subscription, you can teleport to anywhere in the world and swipe for yourself. Find out more below In the section about how to meet Japanese men. Also, make sure to check out my other country guides to see how their Tinder scores compare.
So, what are Japanese guys like?
I have to admit that character is an extremely individual thing, so I can’t just say that all Japanese men act the same.
However, some things are common and are not just Japanese guy stereotypes, and I’m gonna let you know more about them.
1. Gentleman Rating
Some American women looking for Japanese men are going to be unpleasantly surprised when it comes to how chivalrous they are.
The cultures are different, so if you’re used to your date opening doors or paying the bill wordlessly as most Western men do, you should know that the situation in Japan is a bit different.
But, these guys are going to make sure that you’re happy and satisfied in other ways, which also goes for what are Japanese guys in bed like, if you know what I mean.
International dating can be a problem for many reasons, but what are Japanese guys like in relationships?
The biggest issue is the devotion that the Japanese have towards their work. Some of them work for 12 hours a day, and it might not be for you.
They are even able to not see their friends or family for months and then act as if nothing happened once they see them.
So, if you want somebody who’s constantly going to pay attention to you, you should either give up on that or find somebody who doesn’t have a job.
So, imagine this: you’re dating one of the handsome Japanese guys, you’re going out and having fun. And he’s honest. He answers all the questions that you have. If you ask them enough times.
Here’s the thing. Dating a Japanese guy can be hard if you’re used to your partner telling you how they feel all the time.
Japanese men are honest, but they usually don’t like talking about their emotions, especially in the beginning of the relationship.
I have to say it – guys are always going to be guys!
We can’t go around comparing Japanese men to Americans, or Swedes, or any other country, as the results are all the same – there’s always going to be somebody with no morals and commitments.
The tips for dating a Japanese man are the same as with any other in this case – be careful and look for red flags.
5. How protective are they?
Despite some of the above-mentioned traits that Japanese men have, they can be really protective of their significant others.
They’re there for you and they’re going to defend you if you need to be defended, either verbally or physically.
Let’s say that somebody says a mean comment about you or is being inappropriate towards you – your Japanese guy is here to defend you!
6. Are they resourceful?
As we said before, Japanese men are usually obsessed with their work.
This can be a good thing when it comes to resourcefulness. The handsome Japanese men are hard workers, as the history of their culture is patriarchal. But the times are changing, so there’s a lot more equality.
Other than monetary resourcefulness, they are the same in other areas, mostly because it’s expected of them to know how to do things to survive and not bother anyone while they’re at it.
This is the reason why they can be stubborn at times, but let’s admit it, we’re stubborn too.
When it comes to the level of maturity, dating Japanese guys can be a complicated thing.
The good things are their honesty and the fact that they’ll listen to any problems that you want to rant and share with them.
They also know what they want and can make for a great life-long companion who you’re going to enjoy spending time with.
But there’s a problem that we mentioned before – they’re not that good at communication.
Chances are none of the hot Japanese guys that you’re seeing is going to talk about his feelings much in the first couple of months into your relationship.
This is just the way that they are, but they’re likely to change as time goes on.
Unfortunately, studies have shown that most Japanese people aren’t happy with the way they look.
Whether it’s the influence of Western beauty standards or the ever-changing new fashion, it seems like not a lot of people are satisfied with their looks at all.
But, even though people say that they’re mostly shy, I noticed that they often aren’t.
Even though in Japan it’s normal for a girl to approach a guy, guys aren’t sitting around with nothing to do.
You won’t find the Japanese men as loud and boisterous as for example Americans or Russians, but they don’t need to be loud to be heard.
Trust me, sexy Japanese men know that they’re sexy. And that’s also how Japanese men in bed are like.
9. Are they friendly or reserved?
While they can approach you with confidence, Japanese guys can seem cold and uninterested at first.
But they’re actually great and super friendly once you get to know them and get used to the way that their culture is.
The big rule that they have is no PDA. It’s even a surprise if a Japanese guy agrees to hand-holding while you’re in the street, let alone a kiss!
But this is also a thing that can vary from person to person, especially with the influence of western culture.
Japanese men score very high in the area of character and those characteristics are what I believe women want from a man.
Besides that unique physical feature and culture of these Asian men, there are still more you need to know.

Dating a Japanese Man: Pros and Cons
As with anyone, dating Japanese guys can have both some advantages and disadvantages. And some of them might be completely different than what I described here!
But some things are more common in their behavior, and I had to single them out here for you.
1. Surprisingly good and lengthy conversations
Yes, I know I just wrote about how Japanese men are uncommunicative, but I also said that that can change over time and that there are always exceptions.
And you should cherish these moments, as these conversations can be special even if there’s a language barrier between the two of you.
2. Eating some of the best food there is
Japanese cuisine is known across the world, but there’s nothing better than eating it right there in Japan with a guy that you’re interested in.
Also, he most likely knows how to cook and will treat you to some incredible home-made meals that you probably never tried before.
But in all honesty, eating Japanese food there will make you like it even if you didn’t have the taste for it before.
3. They’re resourceful
As I said before, Japanese men are known to be hard workers, but they’re also resourceful in other areas.
When you meet Japanese men don’t be surprised to find out that they know how to cook and do housework, as they are meticulous and can’t stand bad hygiene.
1. He’s probably going to be a workaholic
That’s just the way that they are. Work comes first for them and it’s a sign of respect to stay in the office until late in the night.
However, I completely understand why this is a problem for people who aren’t used to this. Most people don’t want to be with somebody who dares to put work first in front of their significant other.
But, maybe it just takes some getting used to.
2. Drinking habits
This also has something to do with their work because it’s kind of considered rude to deny your coworkers and even your boss when they call you out for a night of drinking.
Actually, if you’re wondering where to meet Japanese guys in person, a bar is the most likely choice.
Doing this helps them bond and work together better, but you’re the one who’s gonna sit at home, waiting.
3. Societal pressure
Unfortunately, there’s a lot of pressure when it comes to Japanese dating culture.
The international dating seems like a normal thing for us, but in most parts of Japan it’s considered weird to be with somebody who isn’t also Japanese.
Your Japanese boyfriend might have no problem with this, but some people around you are most likely going to.
Of course, dating a Japanese man when you’re non-Japanese is easier in urban areas, as they are also filled with foreigners.
Where to Meet Japanese Men?
If you’re wondering how to meet Japanese men you can either do it in person or on the internet pretty easily.
If you think that meeting people in person is a better option you can just go out anywhere.
If you’re speculating about where to meet Japanese men you should know that even though they work a lot, Japanese people live in cities that never sleep. Go to any bar in Tokyo and you’re bound to find sexy Japanese guys.
But if you’re more into finding single Japanese men online, I have good news for you!
There’s plenty of niche dating websites that you can join to meet Japanese guys. You might have heard of some of them, such as AsianDating, International Love or Meet Asian Singles.
I have to single out AsianDating as the best one, because it’s filled with single Japanese guys that you’re definitely going to be interested in.
But no matter which one you choose you have to go through the same process.
Make an account using your email, accept the terms and conditions, and verify your email. Simple steps that you’re probably already familiar with.
And then you have to set up your profile so that it makes you look like an amazing pick for hot Japanese men.
There’s a lot of info that you can fill out to make your profile seem better, especially on Asian dating.
There are a lot of questions that you can answer that might seem unnecessary, but you should think about it like this – would I agree to get to know someone so secretive that they don’t want to share any info about them?
Not to mention that all dating sites have scammers, so this is a great way to differentiate them from the rest and stay safe.
AsianDating has both the questions about you personally and the type of person that you would like to be matched with, which makes it great.
Once you fill out all the information that you can you’re ready to go and contact your matches.
The chatting is free, but you’re going to be able to contact only premium members if you’re a free member.
How to Conquer a Japanese Man’s Heart
I told you what are Japanese guys like in relationships and how to meet a Japanese guy, but now comes the real deal.
What can you do to win a Japanese man’s heart? Let’s start with some basic Japanese guy dating tips.
1. You need to have good manners
This is an absolute must when it comes to getting the man of your dreams no matter where he comes from, but it’s one of the things that Japanese men consider to be most important.
If you want to get a guy from Japan you have to show that you know your manners, but there are also some other things that you should take care of that connect to this term.
The first thing is femininity. According to a survey conducted with Japanese men, one of the things that they find unattractive is when a woman acts too masculine. They want their lady to be feminine and to also take care of herself, specifically regarding hygiene.
2. Learn the language even a little bit
This can not only be helpful to you personally in everyday situations, but will also help your connection become stronger.
This way you’re also going to show him that you care, because a language barrier can potentially be a threat to your relationship, especially when you aren’t able to tell how you feel in a way that he can understand.
3. Show him that you care
This is a thing that’s going to make him feel special and loved.
Remember, you don’t have to be over-the-top when you do this. A simple home-cooked meal or a message where you tell him that you miss him is going to be enough to let him know that you care about him.
You should also show that you care about other people about you. Nobody’s going to want you if you’re just being mean all the time.
4. Compliment him
When you compliment your man you give him confidence and support that he needs to get through the day. These guys work like crazy and they’re definitely going to appreciate it.
Compliment him on his looks or on the things he does, on his smile or his clothes, and watch his confidence skyrocket.
5. Be optimistic
Japanese men don’t like women who just complain all the time.
But let’s be honest, nobody does. You can’t spend your time being a Debby downer and then expect people around you to want to spend time with you.
While you can have great conversations with Japanese men, please don’t emotionally drain them. That is definitely going to make them uninterested.
This is a piece of dating advice that you can use when it comes to any nationality in the world, so keep in mind that the way that you act is going to determine the way that people feel about you, and use it to your advantage.
Top 3 Hottest Japanese Men
This was a really really tough choice for me personally, but I have some hot Japanese guys that I had to pick out of a dozen.
You’re probably going to like them as much as I did. A lot.
1. Masaki Okada
This man has to be one of the dreamiest Japanese actors there are.
Well, at least for me.
He just looks so elegant and kind at the same time, and it makes him irresistible.
He’s an actor born in 1989, which some might consider to be young, but look at him. He looks great and he acts great! What more could you want?
Masaki Okada is known as the actor who played Sekime Kyogo in “Hanazakari no Kimitachi” and Takuma Kakinouchi in “I Give My First Love To You”.
He’s a bit taller than an average Japanese guy – he’s 5’11’’ (181 cm), which makes him even more perfect.
2. Toma Ikuta
Toma Ikuta is from Hokkaido, Japan, where he also grew up.
He was born in 1984, and became a successful star during his life. He also had a part in “Hanazakari no Kimitachi”, but the role that propelled him to stardom was in a drama called “Mawang”.
He’s a funny and down-to-earth guy, and also incredibly romantic.
Once he mentioned how his dream date would be viewing the city in the night time from some dark hilltop, and I couldn’t agree more.
His sense of humor is hilarious, he admitted that he thinks that his best asset is his ass, and once again, I have to agree.
3. Jin Akanishi
Jin Akanishi is a talented young…well, everything. He’s an actor, singer-songwriter, voice actor and many other things.
He really is filled with surprises, and look really good at the same time.
You might have seen him in the movie “47 Ronin” where he acted alongside Keanu Reeves.
He’s cute and successful!
